Emory's Lipstadt appointed to U.S. delegation on discrimination

Professor Deborah Lipstadt has been appointed by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice as a member of a United States delegation to a conference June 7-8 in Bucharest, Romania, on Combating Discrimination and Promoting Mutual Respect and Understanding, sponsored by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.
Lipstadt, director of Emory's Tam Institute for Jewish Studies and Dorot Professor of Modern Jewish and Holocaust Studies, is one of nine members of the delegation, which is headed by U.S. Rep. Eric Cantor of Virginia.

Mellon Mays fellowship prepares scholars to transform the academy

The three seniors participating in the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship have different plans upon graduation from Emory this month: Rhodes scholar Zachary Manfredi will spend the summer working on behalf of indigenous communities at the World Bank before starting Oxford University in the fall; Nicole Naar will help Mexican immigrants learn English through Teach for America; and Drew Winchester plans to pursue a career at Emory. Yet all agree that the program, funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, was the most rewarding aspect of their Emory experience, one that gives them a distinct advantage when they eventually enter graduate school and the professorate.

Robbie Brown wins McMullan Award, Donates $20,000 Prize
Senior Robbie Brown has received the College's Lucius Lamar McMullan Award, given annually to an Emory College graduate who demonstrates promise of becoming a future leader and serving the global community. Brown's many accomplishments at the College, which had already netted him Tom Chris Allen and Robert T. Jones Jr. scholarships, fulfill the first requirement; what he did with the $20,000 prize money attests to the second.

Professor Natasha Trethewey receives the Pulitzer Prize in poetry
Creative writing professor Natasha Trethewey won the 2007 Pulitzer Prize in Poetry for her collection Native Guard, which blends Civil War history with Trethewey's personal experiences. In 2003 she received a Guggenheim Fellowship in recognition of her distinguished achievement and exceptional promise.

Senior Zachary Manfredi selected as a Rhodes Scholar
Emory University senior Zachary Manfredi was one of 32 American college or university students selected as a 2007 Rhodes Scholar. Manfredi is the 18th Emory student to be selected for the scholarship that provides for two or three years of study at Oxford University in England.

Emory Fulbright Scholars represent many disciplines
Seven Emory students so far have been selected to receive Fulbright Scholarships for study and work abroad: Nathan Meeks, a business and Spanish major; Charles Harrison, a comparative literature and Spanish major; Whitney Hostetter, an international studies and German major; Stephanie Malak, a Spanish and international studies major; Ryan Plocher, an English and German studies major; Michael DeJonge, a graduate student in religion; and Josh Plotnik, a graduate student in psychology.
