Mission statement
Hybrid
Vigor (ISSN 1542-3859) is an online and print publication sponsored
by the Science and Society Program of Emory University. The biological
term "hybrid vigor" refers to the phenomenon that genetically
diverse offspring (hybrids) are often more fit for survival than their
purebred peers. For example, mongrels are often healthier than pure
breeds.
By the same principle, we believe that science and science understanding
is strongest when viewed from a variety of perspectives. Examining current
issues from a broad spectrum of disciplines illuminates many new dimensions.
Physics, chemistry, biology, anthropology, sociology, history, and ethics
are just a few of the fields our vision incorporates.
By presenting science in this manner, we aim to make this often intimidating
field accessible and interesting to everyone, from the most respected
researchers to those without any scientific background.
In today's modern world, a greater understanding of science and its
role in everyday life is essential. As Arri Eisen, Science and Society's
director, explains, "All we want is to make the world scientifically
literate."
