Hybrid Vigor Mission Statement

Hybrid vigor is a biological term refering to the fact that genetically diverse offspring (hybrids) are more fit for survival (vigorous) than non-diverse organisms. As one observer explained, "mutts are healthier than pure breeds."

Hybrid Vigor is an on-line and print publication sponsored by the Science and Society Program of Emory University. Hybrid Vigor, the publication, is built around the same principles as hybrid vigor, the genetic term.

We believe that science and science understanding is strongest when viewed from a variety of perspectives. In writing about science and society, Hybrid Vigor aims to move beyond viewing science from a one-sided perspective. Examining current issues from a broad spectrum of disciplines illuminates many new dimensions. Biology, anthropology, ethics, sociology, chemistry, history, and physics are just a few of the studies our vision incorporates.

By presenting science in this manner, we aim to make this often-intimidating field accessible and interesting to everyone, from the most respected researchers to those without any scientific background.

In today's modern world, a greater understanding of science and its role in everyday life is essential. As Arri Eisen, Science and Society's Director, explains, "All we want is to make the world scientifically literate.
