About this Issue

It is the dawn of a new semester. There are new goals to be met, new challenges to face, and new feats to be accomplished.  We are often overwhelmed by the events and obligations in our lives and many lament: ‘so much to do and so little time.’ In an effort to create more time for the things we have to do or the things we want to do, we often borrow from our sleep time, promising to repay at a later date. One coffee seller declares “Life’s short – stay up for it” and in that spirit we often try to stay awake even beyond the limits of our physical endurance, because we don’t want to miss a thing. After all, who needs sleep anyway?

We all need sleep!

This issue of Hybrid Vigor presents some interesting insights on how sleep can help to maximize productivity and enhance the body’s ability to perform. Information about common sleep disorders is also presented. We visit the dream world briefly in a discussion on color in dreams then give a cautionary tale about the dangers of driving under the influence of sleep. This exciting issue also takes us on tour through the different stages of sleep and on a cultural expedition with an Emory anthropologist. By the way, sleep is not just a people thing. Bedbugs bite bugs too!

Nighty night.
