Catalog Description: (Same as English 216.) Spring. A general history of Western drama from the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries, focusing on representative dramatic works and on the influences of the actor, staging, and the audience.

Semester Details:

Study of Western drama from the 18th century through the modern period. Reading of representative dramas (average of two or three per week)with special attention given to their cultural and historical contexts.

Playwrights covered: Lillo, Marivaux, Schiller, Scribe, Feydeau, Ibsen, Shaw, Chekhov, Strindberg, Brecht, Beckett, Muller.
