Catalog Description: Reading of Vergil's Aeneid and Dante's Divine Comedy in English translation.

Semester Details:

Reading of Vergil's Aeneid and Dante's Divine Comedy in English translation.  We will focus on the Aeneid as (pagan) tragedy, "corrected" by Dante's Christian comedy, and most particularly on the relationship of Dante's (mis)representation of "Virgil" (his guide through Inferno and most of Purgatorio) to this theme. Readings will be supplemented by selected critical essays. Opportunity will be given for some reading in Latin or Italian for any students who wish to do so.

Thoughtful preparation for and participation in class, three 7- page papers--with necessity of revision. Oral presentations on secondary readings. Some weekly one-page writing assignments as necessary (ungraded, for your benefit only).
