The cultures of the ancient Mediterranean world are often viewed as “frogs around the pond”: defined by their interaction as much as their unique identities. In this course, we focus on the archaeology of these cultures and examine how they interacted with each other by sharing everything from raw materials and technologies to mythology and artistic styles. Our geographical range includes cultures in Egypt, Mesopotamia, Anatolia, Palestine, Greece, and Rome, as well as the island cultures of Cyprus, Crete, and the Phoenicians. We will use the archaeological remains of these cultures to explore what the material objects that people leave behind them can tell us about how they led their lives.
