Catalog Description: (Same as Chinese 373WR.) Designed as an introduction to premodern Chinese culture, this course explores the literary and social practices that evolved around the canonized texts associated with Confucius and his disciples.
Semester Details: For more than two thousand years, a small set of texts associated with Confucius and his disciples formed the core of the Chinese educational curriculum. By reading the development of various Confucian currents from late antiquity through the early twentieth century, this seminar will examine the literary and social practices that evolved around a unique body of writings through close readings of a broad range of primary material in English translation. Throughout the seminar, we will rethink the strengths and limitations of modern “Western” categories in our understanding of East Asian Tradition whose central teachings cut across the boundary of philosophy, religion and political doctrine.
