Catalog Description: (Same as Middle Eastern Studies 125.) Readings in English of major works from Biblical narrative to modern Hebrew, Yiddish, and other Jewish fiction.
Semester Details: This course is based on readings in major works of the Jewish literary tradition. The source material ranges from Biblical narrative to Modern Hebrew prose and poetry. The aim of this course is to introduce students to the breadth and depth of the Jewish literary traditions. After grounding in Biblical narrative we will move to the Jewish experience in pre-modern Europe and the beginning of the Hebrew literary renaissance. The last part of the course will focus on the contemporary Jewish experience in the U.S. and Israel.
