Content: This course examines the idea of feminine beauty and explores possibilities for resisting, negotiating, or revising the appearance standards that feminine beauty prescribes. We will explore social practices and material culture of feminine beauty, gauging how beauty can be detrimental and/or beneficial both to women whose bodies do not conform to beauty's standards as well as to women who embody beauty's requirements. This interrogation of beauty and its practices will open out to survey the gender, race, ability, class, and sexuality systems.
All of the readings will be on e-reserves.
