Chinese 102 is the second course of Elementary Mandarin Chinese. You will continue to build your skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing in a communicative context. Grammatical accuracy and cultural competence will both be emphasized throughout the course. Daily-life topics will continue to be the focus, including talking about the weather, dining, asking directions, birthday party, seeing a doctor, dating, renting an apartment, sports, travel, and at the airport.
By the end of this semester, you should be able to:
• Comprehend Mandarin speech delivered at a normal or close-to-normal speed on the topics you have practiced during the first year;
• Converse in accurate articulation and tones with native speakers of Mandarin about these topics;
• Read and understand passages containing the vocabulary items and the sentence structures you have studied in the first year;
• Write elegantly and in correct stroke order the Chinese characters you have learned in the first year;
• Use culturally appropriate forms in both spoken and written communication;
• Be prepared in both knowledge and skills to proceed to CHN 201 Intermediate Mandarin Chinese I.
