Semester Details:

Reading in Greek of selected passages of Longus’ Daphnis and Chloe, a pastoral novel on the theme of eros, desribing the discovery of love, sex, and their true identity by the two foundlings, Daphnis and Chloe, and their surmounting of such obstacles to their love as evil rivals, kidnappers, pirates, obtuse parents, and social class differences. Readings in Greek will be supplemented by such secondary readings as the pastoral poems of Theocritus and Vergil (in which Daphnis also figures), Plato’s Symposium (a dialogue on the subject of eros), and critical essays on the Greek romance.
