The Michael C. Carlos Museum has amassed one of the most impressive University collections of ancient Roman art in the U.S. This seminar will extensively examine the portraits, reliefs, sarcophagi, statuary, funerary urns, gems and ceramics housed in the museum and situate them within broader trends in the development of Roman art. Students will be able work closely with individual objects and the seminar will address important issues of social, political, historical and aesthetic meaning, as well as context, reception, and production.
