Catalog Description: Introduction to the religions of the ancient Greek and Roman worlds: ritual types, forms of evidence, and methods of investigation, from the Bronze Age to the early Christian era.

Semester Details: The ancient world was full of gods, and the construction of successful relationships with them was a pathway to prosperity in business, victory in war, the growth of the city and the protection of the family.  In this course we examine the rituals through which these relationships were created and maintained, using a combination of archaeological, literary, and comparative anthropological material.  We begin with the Neolithic and end with the early Christian era; along the way we will encounter burials, civic festivals, hero cults, magic, and mystery initiations. Prerequisite: Greek mythology, or consent of professor.
