Catalog Description: Every semester. Credit, four hours. Technical as well as aesthetic issues are examined. History of photography will be used as a learning tool.

Semester Details:

This course will teach the basic principles of small format (35mm) black and white photography, both technical and aesthetic. Topics will include camera use and techniques, film developing, darkroom and printing skills, image selection and presentation, and an overview of the history of photography.

Students must provide their own 35mm camera, which must be capable of all-manual use. A 50mm lens or 28mm lens is preferred. A point and shoot or digital camera is not acceptable for this course. Students must also purchase film and photographic paper, and miscellaneous supplies. Lab fee of $65 covers costs of chemicals for the term.

Evaluation will be based primarily on the final portfolio, which will be comprised of the twenty (20) best pictures made during the course. Assignments, participation and overall effort will also be considered. Please see the attached sample syllabus.
