Catalog Description: A systematic reading of plays through dramatic structure as genre, exploring such major forms as tragedy or comedy.

Semester Details: Content: A guided seminar in the varieties of Western dramatic comedy, including satire, farce, comedy, and romance, with excursions into burlesque/vaudeville, silent comedy, and stand-up. Reading and discussion of ten to twelve plays from the classic comic canon, supported by major critical treatments of comedy and laughter.

Assessment: Four short response papers and a critical term paper. As with all seminars, attendance and participation are crucial.
