Prerequisites: THEA 201, or 200-level or higher acting course, or permission of instructor.

Catalog Description: Fall. Prerequisites: Theater 201 or a 200-level or higher acting course, or permission of instructor. A theoretical and practical introduction to the art of staging plays, including script analysis, rehearsal techniques, and presentation of scenes.

Semester Details:

Content: This course is intended to develop the student's ability to analyze plays for acting and staging possibilities and develop a rehearsal strategy for realizing the play. The first half of the course is devoted to analyzing selected plays and  staging moments. Practical techniques are also assigned that deal with basic directing approaches, particularly work with text, actors and space. The second half of the course concentrates on the students staging a selected ten minute play.

Assessment: Students are graded primarily on the basis of class participation, three papers, attending rehearsals and successful completion of the dramaturgical and production work of their directorial project.
