Catalog Description: Credit, four hours. Study of basic phonetics in Spanish with the goal of improving oral pronunciation.

Semester Details:

4 credits

Content: This course, taught in Spanish, focuses on  linguistic study of the Spanish sound system (pronunciation). We will explore in detail both articulatory phonetics (how sounds are pronounced) and phonology (how sounds are organized and pattern in Spanish). Throughout we will take a comparative approach to Spanish and English phonetics and phonology. We will also explore how pronunciation varies across the Spanish-speaking world, with attention to regional differences (dialects) other social differences (social class, ethnicity, gender, and age), and stylistic differences (variation as affected by situation or context of communication). NOTE: Although this course can be used by non-native students to improve their pronunciation of Spanish,  it is fundamentally a Linguistics course focused on a conceptual understanding of Spanish phonetics and phonology, and how these vary according to social context; native speakers may therefore enroll in this course.

Texts: Readings provided by instructor.

Pre-requisites: Spanish 300 or permission from instructor.  No background in Linguistics is required.

Pre-requisites: Grading will be based on attendance/participation, homework assignments, exams, and a final dialect/transcription project.
