Catalog Description: Suggested prerequisite: Political Science 110. This course delves into the philosophical and contextual underpinnings of human rights in order to create a framework for understanding the increasing importance of human rights in the international system.

Semester Details:

The emergence and acceptance of human rights is one of the hallmark achievements of the 20th Century. This course examines the construction and evolution of an international human rights system since the end of WWII.  The course will address the philosophical foundations, historical evolution, and institutional development of human rights.  The course will also focus on the roles of various actors in furthering the implementation of human rights.  Finally the course will explore the recent emergence of domestic, regional and international accountability mechanisms for human rights violations.
