Catalog Description: Fall. This course explores the relationship between two broadly held concepts' black music and race. Using principal texts, representative musical examples, and intense discussion, the student will discover the dynamics of our racial imagination.
Semester Details: This course examines the subjective experience and neural substrates of music perception and performance. The course will address questions such as:
*What makes something musical?
*How are the complex sounds of music processed by the brain?
*What are the relationships of music to language, emotions and memory?
*How can theories of motor learning be applied to music performances?
*Can the neural substrates of musical improvisation be identified?
*How are the brains of musicians different?
*What is the evidence for the efficacy of music therapy?
*Is music uniquely human?
