Prerequisites: Math 250
Catalog Description: Spring. Prerequisite: Mathematics 250. Axiomatic treatment of vector spaces, inner product spaces, minimal polynomials, Cayley Hamilton theorem, Jordan form, and bilinear forms.
Semester Details:
This course will begin with the theory of vector spaces. We will examine matrices and linear transformations and then develop their relationship. All of this builds toward the study of eigenvalues, diagonalization, and Jordan canonical form. Emphasis will be placed on rigorous proof and intuition, rather than computation.
This course is required for the B.S. degree in Mathematics. Math 221 is no longer a prerequisite for Math 321. However, since Math 321 will assume familiarity with matrices, some students might benefit from enrolling in Math 221 prior to Math 321.
The schedule of courses on O.P.U.S. is the official listing of courses, including days and times they meet and the General Education Requirements they satisfy. Students should use course descriptions as general guidelines. Course requirements, grading details, book lists, and syllabi are subject to change.
