Catalog Description: Topics to be announced each semester. Course is offered in English (for non-Italian speakers), either in Italy (on the Emory semester abroad programs) or on campus. Course will vary, including topics of literature, history, culture, art history, political thought, current trends, and more. May be repeated for credit when topic varies.
Semester Details: Content: This course will explore the visual arts in the context of urban development in central Italy, in the period between approximately 1260 and 1400. Focusing on the art and architecture of cities like San Gimignano, Assisi, Perugia, Florence, Padua, and Siena, we will consider how the interests of governments, citizens, and artisans of various sorts interacted in the commissioning and production of art in this vibrant period of Italian history.
