Catalog Description: (Same as Environmental Studies 344.) History of the relationship between the American people, land, weather, and natural resources, with special attention to the environmental movement since 1960.

Semester Details:

Content:    The history of the human interaction with animals, plants, and the landscape since the first European settlement of the Americas.  The first half of the course will consider how farming, forestry, gold-rushes, industry, and irrigation transformed the landscape and brought to an end the American Indians’ way of life.  The second half will study the rise of the environmental movement in America after World War II and the great controversies of recent decades, including population, pollution, global climate change, urban sprawl, and deep ecology.
