Catalog Description: (Same as African American Studies 339.) Examines African American history from 1865 to the present. Emphasizes regional, gender, and class distinctions within black communities, and the ways in which industrial transformations shaped black life, thought, and resistance.

Semester Details:

Content: This course examines the collective experiences of African-descendant people from the latter part of the 19th century to the present in the United States.   It also on occasion looks at the experiences of African-descendant people in other parts of the African Diaspora.

Required Texts: Required texts include the following: Slavery by Another Name:  The Re-Enslavement of African Americans From the Civil War to World World II; To Make Our World Anew, Vol. 2.; Bombingham; One Blood: The Life and Death of Charles Drew

Grading: Includes mandatory class attendance, a newspaper project, weekly readings and oral reports, an in class midterm and take-home final examination.
