Catalog Description: Topics vary. This capstone seminar uses disease-specific case studies to demonstrate how global health problems are best understood from multiple perspectives. Course meetings are coordinated with ongoing programs in Rollins School of Public Health.
Semester Details: This class examines the population processes of fertility and mortality from a cultural anthropology perspective. The course starts with a brief introduction to anthropological demography, or the study of population dynamics in cultural context. Fertility and mortality are explored through ethnographic examples from around the world. Articles and book chapters are alternated with full-length ethnographic manuscripts on high and low fertility, infertility, birth, infant mortality, and adult mortality. In the final two weeks of the course, we will turn to the case of post-Soviet Russia, one of the most striking examples of rapid fertility and mortality change in modern history.
