This course focuses on perceptions and statutes of right and wrong in countries whose governments needed to present a new face to their citizenry and the world after the Second World War. Materials are mostly nonfiction, but also include literary and cinematic works of imagination. Topics to be discussed include: "denazification" and the myth of Stunde Null, pro- and anti-Americanism, shifting (and persistent) attitudes toward Jews and Eastern Europeans, the Rechtsstaat and extra-parliamentary opposition, student radicalism and terrorism, reunification, and left- and right-wing nostalgia for totalitarianism.
