Prerequisites: German 201

Catalog Description: Spring, Summer (Vienna). Continuation of 201. Completes the basic sequence leading to the Zertifikat Deutsch als Fremdsprache.

Semester Details: German 202 is the second of the two-course sequence that explores German national identity from a cultural historical perspective. Following a reverse chronology, this course examines German identity by focusing on specific locations at pivotal moments in modern German history and then investigating how individuals narrated stories about their identity as German speakers from that location. Specifically, the following locations and time periods will be studied:

* Munich and Prague, 1918-1933

* Vienna, fin-de-siecle

* Frankfurt and Paris, mid-19th century

* Weimar, turn of the 19th-century

Through this focus on personal stories at specific moments and places in German history, students will develop their abilities as readers, writers, and speakers of German. Students will use supplemental texts and a grammar review textbook to acquire the language necessary to communicate meaningfully about the topic of national identity.
