Catalog Description: Fall. Prerequisite/corequisite: French 314. A survey of literary and artistic creations of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, with special attention to the cultural and historical context in which they were produced.
Semester Details: Content: This course presents major literary developments in the 17th and 18th centuries as a function of the larger cultural, social and historical contexts. Issues addressed may include the elaboration of subjectivity, the representation of the body in terms of systems of social exchange, questions of gender and sexual difference, etc. in dramatic and novelistic texts. Authors may include Descartes, Corneille, Racine, Molière, Prevost, Montesquieu, Marivaux, etc.
