Catalog Description: (Same as Biology 371.) Credit, two hours. This course will explore the diverse biomes of the tropics. Focus will be on tropical forests and grasslands with an emphasis on ecological processes, biodiversity, human impact on the tropics, indigenous peoples, and ethnobotany.

Semester Details:

This 2-credit hour lecture course will explore the diverse biomes of the tropics.  Focus will be on tropical forests (including neotropics, old world tropics and montane forests), grasslands, mangroves, and arid tropics with an emphasis on ecological processes, biodiversity, human impact on the tropics, indigenous people, and ethnobotany. Grading is based on class participation, short written assignments, and a final exam. May be used to fullfill the Field Course requirement for ENVS majors when taken with ENVS 372, Ecology of the Tropics Field Course.

A variety of published papers and selected readings from books will be utilized.
