Content: In this class we will study dramatic literature written during the first half of the twentieth century, beginning with Anton Chekhov's realistic dramas of pre-revolutionary Russia and concluding with Samuel Beckett's experimental works for stage, radio, and film. Along the way we will read some of the best plays by some of the century's best and most important playwrights, including Chekhov, W. B. Yeats, Gertrude Stein, Federico García Lorca, Bertolt Brecht, and Beckett.
Particulars: one short paper (2-3 pages) on each playwright, due regularly throughout the term; one longer paper (5-6 pages) due at the end of the semester; one oral report which may substitute for one of the short papers.
