Catalog Description: Every semester. Intensive writing course that trains students in techniques of writing and literary analysis through writing about literature. Readings and format vary in different sections. Satisfies first-year English writing requirement.
Semester Details: Content: Love has been a subject of poetry and prose since antiquity, and in this class your writing and reading will focus on love and the laws and social norms that structure narratives of love. We will read texts about love: its limits, its triumphs, and its failures. Texts will be drawn from short stories, novels, and films that explore the relationship between issues such as love and sex, polygamy and love, and love and race. Using these texts as source material, we will develop your critical writing skills through short weekly responses and longer formal papers.
