Content: Politicians, philosophers, activists, filmmakers, and journalists constantly try to persuade their audience of the strength and truthfulness of their perspectives. In this class we will study a variety of rhetorical strategies people employ to convince, and often manipulate, their readers, viewers, and listeners. Through an engagement with diverse texts and images, students will become familiar with effective argumentation, the role of the audience, the structure of a strong paper and paragraph, and the writing process as such.
Texts: Written and visual materials analyzed in this course will include speeches by American and non-American politicians, magazine and newspaper articles, commercial advertisements, documentaries, as well as fictional texts.
Particulars: Students will be expected to write 3-4 extended essays and a number of shorter response papers.
