Prerequisites: Biology 141 and 142.

Catalog Description: Prerequisite: Biology 142. Introduction to the concepts of microbial physiology, biochemistry, genetics, and evolution.

Semester Details:

NOTE:  This section is for Nursing Students.  Nursing students must obtain approval from Andrea Clark (andrea.clark@emory.edu) at the Nursing School prior to being enrolled by the Biology Department.

This course will present the basic elements of microbiology, including the study of viruses but emphasizing bacteriology.  Topics to be covered will include the following:  the tools of microbiology, microbial taxonomy and evolution, microbial physiology, microbial biochemistry, microbial genetics, and microbial pathogenesis.  The implications of microbiology on medicine, environment, basic research, and biotechnology will be discussed.  There is an optional 2-credit hour lab associated with the course (Biology 370L-Introduction to Microbiology Laboratory).  This course, taken together with Biology 370L, meets the upper level laboratory requirement for the Biology majors.
