Catalog Description: Fall and spring. Freshmen only. Variable topics.

Semester Details:

This course does NOT count toward the Biology major.

This seminar will explore several of the relationships, both harmful and beneficial, that exist between humans and microorganisms.  Topics that will be covered include evidence for ancient microbial plagues, the impact of infectious diseases on colonization of the New World, examples of natural immunity in humans produced by microbes, microorganisms and cancer, and others.  Students will learn some basic microbiology in addition to exploring societal elements of human-microbe interactions.

Students will be expected to give a seminar presentation to the class, to participate in an in-class debate, to participate in in-class discussions, and to complete one writing assignment.
