Catalog Description: Advanced seminar with emphasis on critical texts, methods, and techniques of art historical investigation. Permission from instructor required.

Semester Details:

In the decades between the Civil War and the first World War, American artists flocked to Europe in unprecedented numbers to burnish their reputations with cosmopolitan credentials. This seminar will explore the experience and achievement of those artists of the Gilded Age. Particular attention will be devoted to women artists, who sought to escape not only the prejudices impeding their professional training but also the confines of a conservative society. The renowned triumvirate of American expatriates James McNeill Whistler, John Singer Sargent, and Mary Cassatt will figure prominently in this course, but their international acclaim will be considered within the context of broader artistic and cultural trends that inspired artists to travel beyond the capitals of Europe to more picturesque regions in Italy, France, Holland, Spain, Germany, and England.

The schedule of courses on O.P.U.S. is the official listing of courses, including days and times they meet and the General Education Requirements they satisfy.
