Catalog Description: Introduction to the art and architecture of ancient Central and South America (Northern and Central Andes) with emphasis on Costa Rica and Peru. Art of various media in the Carlos Museum collection will be featured.

Semester Details:  

This introductory course covers the arts of the indigenous cultures of ancient lower Central America (Costa Rica and Panama) and Andean South America (Peru/Bolivia/Chile) before A.D. 1550.  Media include architecture, textiles, featherwork, ceramics, stone sculpture, and metalwork.  Andean cultures include: Chavín, Paracas, Nasca, Moche, Wari-Tiwanaku, Chimú, Chancay, and Inka. Original works of art in the Michael C. Carlos Museum will be featured.
