Catalog Description: Examination of the biological bases of sex differences and their development.
Semester Details: This course will examine the biological bases of sex differences and their development. Topics to be considered will include the evidence for physiological and behavioral sex differences in animals and humans, the chromosomal basis of sex determination, the influences of sex steroids on reproductive tract development and the development of neural structures and neuroendocrine function, protective mechanisms, and the concept of critical periods. Interspecific differences in the mechanisms of sexual differentiation will be examined from an adaptive perspective. The relevance of animal models to human sexual differentiation will be considered by examining disorders of human development and the disruptive effects of environmental pollution and other agents on sexual differentiation.
