Semester Details:

What is medical anthropology? This course aims at broadening and deepening our understanding about health, illness, medicine, suffering, life, death, mind and body from social and cultural anthropological perspectives. These issues appear as "natural" aspects of our life, but are highly shaped by social and cultural processes. We will question and challenge our own in-built beliefs by studying the recent discoveries in biomedicine, non-Western medical systems, healing and therapeutic practices. Students are expected to conduct a mini-interview or mini-ethnography.

Class discussion and presentation are important aspects of this class and students are expected to actively participate in discussion and lead discussion based on assigned readings. Students are also required to conduct a mini ethnography. Students need to write several papers, take three exams, and a final project which is based upon their ethnography.

The schedule of courses on O.P.U.S. is the official listing of courses, including days and times they meet and the General Education Requirements they satisfy.
