Garden Tips

waterfallSave Water!

Collect water from as many different sources as possible to distribute to your plants as needed. Take inventory of your landscape and come up with future plans to incorporate plants that require less water to survive.

Decrease water guzzling plants, trees and grassy lawns by increasing the over-all size of your planting beds. Use drought tollerant plants and try planting with lots of space between plants. Add lots of mulch (red pine straw/bark is gorgeous), and be creative with the use of boulders, rocks and garden accents.

Transplant water guzzling plants to containers and try using gator bags for trees. Use grasses for accent plants. If you have plants that did not do well this past year - identify the ones that can be brought inside to be used as houseplants.

Winter Interest

Look for plants with winter interest (i.e., colorful or peeling bark, late season flowers/berries, interesting growth habit, etc.). Plants with winter interest include Witch Hazel, Eucalyptus, Contorted Filbert, Chinese Fringe Tree, Weeping Pussy Willow, just to name a few.
