Advisor Overview
Administrators
The FAME Program is directed by Assistant Dean Priscilla Echols (Office for Undergraduate Education), Cynthia Shaw (Director of Student Development, Division of Campus Life), and coordinated by Senior Program Associate Tina McDowell (Office for Undergraduate Education).
Groups
FAME groups are comprised of about eight or nine first-year men and eight or nine first-year women, with a faculty leader, a staff leader, and one or two advanced students.
Freshman
Freshmen are pre-assigned to a FAME group by the administrators in the FAME program. Freshmen will schedule their courses around the FAME course.
Faculty Leaders
Faculty Leaders are considered the main advisers for the groups. The faculty adviser will advise students on completing the education requirements and will create mentoring relationships with the students. Students are assigned to the faculty leader for two years or until the student officially declares a major, whichever comes first. Students are required to choose a major by the end of their second year. When the student chooses a major, the major department assigns a faculty adviser in the department. Students formally indicate their choice of major by going to the appropriate department and completing a Declaration of Major form.
Staff Leaders
Staff Leaders are secondary advisers to the students. Staff are assigned to the group for the six week period. Many times staff leaders develop a on-going relationship with the students. They assist students with information about academics, social and cultural resources on Emory’s campus and in the Atlanta community.
Student Leaders
Student Leaders are peer advisers to the students. These relationships can be long-lasting relationships. Students leaders have great knowledge about courses, requirements, majors, registration, life on campus, and different organizations for students. Student leaders knowledge carries a lot of weight with the first-year students.
Orientation Week Pre-Advising
Student Information Packages
During the summer freshmen will receive instructions on how to access the Emory College 101 Blackboard site. Emory College 101 contains information on registration, scheduling, general education requirements, majors, minors and much more critical information for first-year students.
Each first-year student should feel free to get in touch with the adviser whenever the student encounters a problem he or she is not able to handle alone; the adviser should give the benefit of counsel and direct the student to the appropriate person or facility for further help. After Orientation Week, FAME leaders will have weekly contact with the freshman advisees through the first week of October.
