How long does it take to process my application?

You will be notified in three weeks if you are approved or not, depending on the volume of other applicants submitting applications at that time. If you turn in your application after April 15, we cannot guarantee the same turnaround time.

How do I apply for permission to do Transient Study?

Students wishing to participate in Transient Study must first complete and submit a Transient Study Application. You can apply online here or find a hard-copy application to print out.

Students should complete and return the application, containing signatures of both student and their FAME advisor, to: Cheryl Rouse-Hodge, Office for Undergraduate Education, Emory College, 300 White Hall, Atlanta, GA 30322. Any accompanying form(s) from the host school(s) requiring the Dean's signature should be attached. Incomplete applications will not be accepted.

What do I need to submit with my application?

All students participating in transient study must submit an unofficial transcript with an application. You can print out a transcript on OPUS.

How much does it cost to take summer classes?

You pay the tuition and fees that the host college charges, and $100 to the Office for Undergraduate Education, Emory College.

Where can I find more specific rules for Transient Study?

Rules for Transient Study are given in the Emory College Catalog section on Academic Regulations, page 396.

If another school assigns a different number of credit hours than the equivalent Emory course is worth, will I receive the Emory value?

Whatever semester hour credit you are awarded from the host school is exactly what will be transferred to your Emory record on approved courses. For example, if you earn 3 semester hours for a course at another school, and its equivalent course at Emory earns 4, only 3 will transfer. Physical education classes are an exception: they transfer as zero credits.

I applied for, or I was approved for Transient Study, but I have changed the host school, and/or the courses I applied to take.   Will I still get my credit?

If changes occur in either the name of the host school, or the course(s) you applied to take, credits(s) would not be accepted for the course work you successfully complete unless a Supplemental Application indicating such changes, has been filed with the Office for Undergraduate Education.  Please be informed that approval would be granted if course work fulfills Emory College academic requirements.

If the credit transferring to Emory is less than what Emory would award for the same course, how can I use that to fulfill a General Education Requirement?

Descriptions of what each GER requires for fulfillment are explained in the Emory College Course Catalog section on General Education Requirements. Some stipulate 'course' and some stipulate an exact number of credit hours.

What if the host school is not on a semester system?

If you earn quarter hour credit, the amount will be converted to semester hours by multiplying by .66 before it is added to your Emory record.

Will I receive partial credit for courses in which I only receive a "C-" or less?

No. You will only receive transfer credit for those approved courses in which you receive a letter grade of at least a "C".

Do I have to apply for Transient Study to attend another school during the summer?

Yes, if you want the credit to transfer back to Emory.  If you do not want the credit to transfer back to Emory, you do not have to apply.  Be advised that many schools will not allow you to register for classes on their campus without a letter of good standing from Emory, regardless of temporary status

What if I take summer classes and don’t do well?

You are not required to have a transcript sent from the other school to Emory, unless you are seeking to have the credit transfer. But remember, the credit won’t transfer unless you do make "C" or better, so the courses in which you do not do well will never appear on your Emory record anyway.

How will I show that the summer course(s) I want to take are the same as the Emory course(s)?

A course description for each course listed on the application must accompany the application. These should match the course description (see the Emory College Catalog) of the correlative Emory course.

Where will I find course descriptions to include with my application?

These are usually published in the Course Atlas, Bulletin or Catalog as at Emory. You may go to the website of the host school to find them, cut and paste for online applications, or print description of the course(s) you intend to take at that school and submit with application. It must contain: course number, credit hours, and detailed explanation of the content of the course, and whether a laboratory is included or required. The URL of the website must appear on the printout. Normally, this will appear on the hard copy automatically when you print from the web. If it does not, write the URL of the exact page you printed out clearly on the paper itself.

What if I do not need the summer class to fulfill a GER at Emory?

Simply check or circle "Yes" in the column for "Elective Credit" on your application. This will add credits to the cumulative amount of credits needed to graduate from Emory.

What is the basis of approval for Transient Study?

A review of the student's application and file will include: transcript; good academic and social standing; accreditation of host school; successful completion of pre-requisites for courses; and whether the student will have a cumulative total of less than 68 credit hours at the end of the spring term.

How will I know I have been approved for Transient Study?

Both student and their assigned FAME advisor will be notified by LearnLink email of the Dean's approval for Transient Study with a letter of authorization.

If I am approved, will all of my courses earn transfer credit?

The letter of authorization you receive by email will specifically state which course(s) requested on your application were approved for Transient Study credit and, if applicable, which area of the General Education Requirements each will fulfill.

Where can I pick up the forms requiring the Dean’s signature that need to be turned in with my application?

Any form(s) that accompanied the application will be approved and signed by the Dean and forwarded to the appropriate address on the form.

What if I need a letter of good standing to give the host school to be allowed to register for summer school?

The letter of authorization could serve as a letter of good standing; however, a letter of good standing is also generated, signed by the Dean, and then mailed directly to the appropriate address on the application or form of the host school(s).

When I return to Emory in the fall, do I have to turn in any papers requesting my transfer credit?

No.  You will be notified after we receive the official transcript and research your application(s).  If there is no record of your authorization for Transient Study, we will contact you about completing the application process.

How will I know if you have received my official transcript from the host school?

We will notify you via LearnLink.  Please be advised that Colleges do not send these official transcripts out automatically: there are privacy laws requiring them to get your permission in writing to release any of your records. So you must make arrangements with them for it to be mailed to us.  We will keep a list (updated weekly) on the door to 212 White Hall showing the names of the students whose transcripts we have received.  You may also ask Cheryl Rouse-Hodge at 404-727-6047 or cheryl.rouse-hodge@emory.edu.

How long does it take to evaluate and post my transferring credits after you receive my transcript?

Depending on the volume of other transcripts being received, one to four weeks.  Please be advised that we will not post ANY credits without an official transcript showing your final grades.

What if I need my credit evaluation posted to OPUS by a deadline because I am applying for early admission to the Business School or for a scholarship application?

There is a place to indicate these special circumstances on your original application. We are committed to supporting your academic progress, but also need sufficient time to handle our work flow.

I will have a cumulative total of 65 hours by the end of spring term. The class I want to take in summer school is worth 4 credits. Will I be approved for Transient Study?

Assuming you meet the other criteria for being approved, you will be allowed to take the 4-hour course. However, when we are posting your transfer credit, we can only transfer 3 of those 4 hours. We cannot add credits that will cause you to go above 68, as your last 64 hours must be taken on the Emory campus. (Refer to the Emory College Course Catalog section on Academic Regulations.)

Can I earn Transient Study credit for working a summer internship related to my proposed major or that would satisfy a GER?

Transient Study does not cover internships. Those must be approved by the individual academic departments.

Can I fulfill a major requirement with Transient Study credit?

Yes. Students must have departmental approval, a dean’s approval, or approval from the Committee on Academic Standards, in order to have approved transient study credits fulfill a Emory College major requirements.  The department chair, dean in the Office for Undergraduate Education, and the Committee on Academic Standards require, in advance, certification of the advanced level of the proposed courses, and compelling reason why course(s) cannot be taken at Emory College.

Can I help boost my GPA by making an "A" in a summer class I take at another school?

No, transfer credits are never calculated into your Emory GPA.

How can I tell if a school is 'accredited'?

A school's bulletin, catalog or website where you will find courses available for summer school will also give the particular accreditation association that certifies the school, just as the Emory College Course Catalog profile does. This information is also given on the official transcript that we receive from the host school, which is what we use to verify that you attended an accredited school in the U.S. and its protectorates or territories.

Can I earn Transient Study credit for attending summer school here at Emory?

No, Registration for Summer Session study at Emory is under the jurisdiction of Emory College, its Registrar and Admission offices, and is not a part of Transient Study. It is posted to your Emory transcript as the fall and spring semesters are.

Can I get Transient Study credit by attending school outside the U.S.?

No, but you may receive transfer credit if you are approved by Emory's Center for International Programs Abroad.

What if I attend a school outside the U.S., but receive credit through another American university on their transcript?

That circumstance is not considered Transient Study, and must be approved through CIPA or Admissions, depending on when you attended.

Can I get transfer credit for courses I took at other schools before I started at Emory?

Any credit you earned before you came to Emory must be evaluated by the Office of Admissions and does not qualify as Transient Study.

Where can I find more information about Transient Study?
