Dual Degree Programs in Engineering with Georgia Institute of Technology

Emory College offers a dual-degree program that allows students to pursue study in either arts or science at Emory and engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. In this way, students receive a well-rounded liberal arts background from one of the best colleges in the U.S., while also taking engineering courses from one of the nation’s premier universities.

Students who participate in this program earn both a baccalaureate degree from Emory in the field of their choice and a B.S. degree from Georgia Tech in one of these twelve fields:  aerospace, biomedical, ceramic, chemical, civil, electrical, industrial, mechanical, nuclear, textile engineering, engineering science, textiles or textile chemistry.

Program eligibility

The program is open to Emory College students whose course grades and standardized tests scores indicate that they could satisfactorily complete the degree requirements for the chosen major at Emory and the engineering program at Georgia Tech.

Course Selection

Over the course of three years in Emory College, you must complete the Emory College General Education Requirements, course requirements for an Emory College major, and a pre-engineering sequence of courses that includes five semesters of mathematics, two semesters of calculus-based physics, one semester of chemistry, two semesters of English, and one semester of U.S. history.  The pre-engineering courses are prerequisites for upper-level courses in all of Georgia Tech’s engineering programs.

Information about the engineering programs offered at Georgia Tech and descriptions of all required courses are included in the General Catalog of Georgia Tech -- a hard-copy may be obtained by writing to the Director of Admissions, Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Georgia 30332.

Advising for dual-degree candidates

Early in your first year, you should make an appointment with Dean Preetha Ram (pram@emory.edu, 404-727-6040). As the Emory adviser for dual-degree candidates, she will help you develop a program that will enable you to complete both the general education and the pre-engineering requirements.  She will also work with you and your major advisor to ensure that you complete your major requirements before you enroll at Georgia Tech.

Applying to the dual-degree program

At the end of the sophomore year, Emory College recommends qualified students to Georgia Tech for participation in the dual-degree program.  Students will then need to submit an application form to Dean Ram who will forward it to Georgia Tech Admissions.  No special application is necessary before this time, but you must attend the dual degree advising sessions held at the beginning of each semester. Students who are accepted by Georgia Tech will complete their third year in Emory College before enrolling at Georgia Tech and beginning their engineering studies.

Tuition fees and financial aid

Students who participate in this program pay tuition and fees to Emory College while enrolled in the College and to Georgia Tech while attending Tech.  Tuition is set at a level determined by the enrolling institution. Both merit awards and need-based aid are available to dual-degree candidates who meet the criteria for those funds.  Emory College will provide financial aid for qualified students while they are enrolled in the College.  Students may apply for financial aid at Georgia Tech when they submit their application for admission to the last two years of the program.  Awards made by each institution will reflect differences in tuition and other resources available to the students.
