Science Experience Abroad (SEA)

Semester Abroad

Student group at CastelloEmory science students have many opportunities to study abroad in Emory-approved programs for a semester. This is a great way to learn – and earn credit towards your major – while taking courses with students from another country and exploring another culture. For most locations, semester study abroad is often the most economical way of studying abroad.

You can tailor your intellectual experience to suit your individual background and needs. And if you are concerned about taking science courses in a foreign language, Emory offers programs in several English-speaking countries.

Students can also participate in research projects at various institutions. You can browse a list of international researchers in the International Research Network database (see Dean Ram). In some cases, a semester program can be extended by Emory-funded summer research. For example, if you spend the spring semester in the Emory-Paris program, you could receive funding to participate in research.

Students wishing to take research for credit in a foreign institution should first discuss their plans with the Director of Undergraduate Study or the Director of Undergraduate Research in their department. Departmental approval is required, as is prior experience in research and a letter from your research advisor.

Quick Facts - Semester Abroad

  • You will need an additional budget for books, airfare and cost of living.
  • You do not delay time to graduation.
  • More detailed information is found on the CIPA website, including information pertaining to financial aid.

Recommendations for Science Study Abroad

We recommend that you start your search with the following world-class universities – each offers Emory students an excellent science program. For some of these science departments, CIPA maintains a list of approved courses (see a CIPA advisor for more information). These are English medium universities where you can take science courses with unquestionably high standards.

In many cases, the course equivalencies have been already worked out so all you have to do is to determine what you would like to take and consult your departmental advisor.  This is SEA’s Highly recommended list for a variety of reasons, most importantly because we think you will have a good experience there with supportive faculty and high quality science courses.

In all cases, you can participate in undergraduate research for credit, if you have had prior research experience at Emory.  If you are interested in a BS/MS four year program offered by some departments like Chemistry and Biology, note that this can be accommodated quite well in the context of a semester or year abroad program.

  • Imperial College, London: Chem majors only. Excellent organic chemistry and nanosciences research.
  • St. Andrews, Scotland: Great for NBB and other science disciplines.
  • Bogazici University, Turkey: Good research opportunities in biochemistry and organic chemistry. Best university in Turkey.
  • University of Cape Town: Research in Chemistry and great for other science majors. Called the Cambridge of the Southern Hemisphere.
  • U. Melbourne: On going collaborations between Emory’s Biology faculty and UM faculty.
  • U. Virgin Islands: Great for Biology and Marine BioSciences.
