Science Experience Abroad (SEA)

Overview | Summer-Study-Abroad | International Research Fellowships | Internships and Community Engagement | Semester Abroad | Planning Ahead | Scholars | Publications

Overview

Students touringUndergraduate students have more reasons than ever to study abroad. Not only does an international experience help develop leadership skills and a deeper understanding of other cultures, it opens up a world of new professional opportunities. Particularly in the sciences, large research projects often involve collaborations with international teams.

SEA is a collaboration  between the  Science Initiatives office of the Office for Undergraduate Education and CIPA. Science Experience Abroad enables science students to stay on track towards their major, pursue their professional and career goals, and incorporate study abroad.
SEA offers the following programs for science students.

  1. Science Summer Study Abroad
  2. Summer Research Abroad: International Research Fellowships
  3. Semester of Science Abroad
  4. Science Courses with Study Abroad
  5. Science and Society Minor with International Track
  6. International Internships and Community Engagement

With the help of Emory’s Science Experience Abroad programs, students can stay on track towards their major, pursue their professional and career goals, and incorporate a study-abroad program.

See article on growing popularity of science study-abroad programs in Chemical & Engineering News (Sept. 4, 2006).

Students exploring a volcano Students can choose programs based on:

(1) Countries: You can choose from English-speaking or non-English-speaking destinations, opt for popular destinations such as Western Europe and Australia or be adventurous and head for more exotic destinations such as India, the West Indies and South Africa.

(2) Academic experience: You can choose from a range of different academic experiences -- courses, research projects, fieldwork or programs that offer experiential learning through internships or community engagement.

(3) Length of programs: Depending on how full your schedule is, you might consider two-week programs (perfect for semester breaks), six-week summer-study-abroad programs, ten-week research programs or longer semester programs.

(4) Academic semester/year: You can choose among semesters – fall, spring or summer – of your sophomore, junior or senior year. Generally, the junior year works out the best for longer programs such as the semester abroad. (See more information on requirements; for example, if you are planning on participating in international research, then it is first necessary to complete a semester of research in a related science lab at Emory.) No matter how full your schedule is, there is usually a way to schedule your courses so that you can take advantage of this wonderful opportunity. Some students even choose to graduate after their summer of study abroad.
