Emory Scholars Program

Scholar Benefits

Scholars’ benefits are available to ALL enrolled Emory Scholars who have active standing in the program. Scholars in active standing must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20.

1) Tuition Money

Scholarship amounts are contingent upon type of scholarship received and cover 8 semesters of study, excluding summer school and transient study. The number of semesters covered for Dean's Achievement scholars varies depending on when they were named a scholar.

2) Scholar Community Building Activities

Emory Scholars are encouraged to build strong bonds within the Scholars community.  One way this can happen is through shared cultural experiences, for which scholars can be reimbursed.

Group Events

For Fall 2009, the limit on group events is three. Individual events are no longer reimbursed.

  • Four or more scholars may attend any ticketed event together and receive reimbursement of up to $20.00 per scholar.
  • Proof of purchase is required (receipts, ticket stubs, etc.) for each scholar. Copies of the same receipt are acceptable so long as each individual scholar indicates his/her expenditures.
  • Additionally, transportation to these events will be reimbursed up to $10.00 per person (with receipt). Scholars should travel together.

Process for Reimbursement

  • Each scholar must take proof of purchase to the Scholars' Lounge, 100C White Hall, within two weeks of the event.
  • No earlier than one week later, each scholar will pick up their approved petty cash voucher in 100C White Hall.
  • Each scholar must take the form and their student ID to the Bursar's Office on the bottom floor of the B. Jones Building to receive cash. No one scholar will be reimbursed in excess of $20 per event.
  • Any forms not processed by the end of the semester during which the event occurred will be null and void.
  • Events attended during winter and summer breaks are NOT reimbursed.
  • Consult the Reimbursement Frequently Asked Questions on the Scholars Learnlink conference for further information.

3) Summer Programs

Summer Study Abroad Awards

  • Scholarships for an Emory CIPA summer study-abroad program each year.
  • One must indicate that he/she is a scholar when applying for a CIPA Program.
  • Visit the CIPA website at www.cipa.emory.edu for further information.
  • The students get a set amount for summer abroad tuition, which is determined annually by the Emory Scholars Program. Transportation and day-to-day spending costs are not included.
  • Students eligible for the Courtesy award are ineligible for this award and should contact Human Resources at 404-727-7613 for more information on the Courtesy monies available to them for summer study abroad.

Criteria for Selection:

  • Class standing in the College will be considered in the selection process. Class standing is based on expected graduation date only, not completed hours or admit term or other such indicators.
  • Active-standing status and a minimum GPA of 3.20 is required.
  • First-time participants will be given priority over past participants.
  • Continuity with current course of study/major as demonstrated in application.
  • Continuity with current course of language study as demonstrated in application.
  • The Selection Committee will determine the number and amount of awards each year.

Scholarship and Service Summer Program (SAS)

  • Scholars may apply for an 8-week-long, community-based service program.
  • This is a two-tiered program.
Beginning interns apply to participate in the Tier 1 Living/Learning Community while working in an Atlanta-based service organization. Stipend and living arrangements are provided.
  • Experienced interns may participate in the Tier 2 Independent Internship. Working as an intern in a community-based service organization, they receive a stipend for the summer and must make their own housing arrangements. These scholars can attend the SAS Tier 1 retreat and are also welcome to sessions of the summer Living/Learning Community.

4) Class Priority

Scholars receive priority in class selection over other members of their own class. Class is determined based on number of credit hours earned. Priority status is automatically recognized by OPUS and the direct enrollment appointment system.

5) Housing Priority

Scholars may participate in the housing assignment system for University room and roommate selection. Priority is automatically assigned to scholar accounts when they complete the housing process as instructed. (This process does not guarantee that you will get the room you requested.) Special room selection occurs before general upperclassman selection.

Incoming first-year students do not receive housing priority.
