Research Partner Program: Faculty Participant Information

Application Process | Notes from the Field | Faculty Participant Information

Do you have a project on which you could use an undergraduate research assistant?

Are you interested in mentoring an undergraduate working with you on your own scholarly work?

Project Description (PDF)

In fall 2004, the College initiated a new program, SIRE Research Partner Program, to support work by first- and second-year students on faculty research projects. This involves undergraduates in the research process early on in their academic careers as research assistants for faculty research projects. The goal is to better prepare the students to undertake advanced projects in the future and to give them an early taste of the research process.

For faculty, students can provide valuable help for research projects. These undergraduates are paid an hourly wage, and they are offered workshops on research skills to enhance their usefulness. Graduate student fellows work with those students to provide additional support.

First-year students are eligible to apply at the end of their first year. Please share a student application with any freshmen who might be good candidates. The College will match students to faculty projects at the beginning of fall semester after interviews with the faculty offering projects. Students commit to work on a project during the fall and spring semesters, though projects involving a one-semester commitment are also acceptable.

This program is open to students in ALL fields. Currently, the projects on which students are working involve a broad range of activities, including literature reviews, transcription of interviews, survey research, Web-based work, work in research labs and review of manuscripts for publication. The projects involve both research for scholarly publication and research related to new or revised courses.

Graduate fellows from the social sciences, humanities and natural sciences provide additional support to the undergraduates selected.

Faculty Application Process

Faculty members interested in requesting undergraduate research assistance for a project of their through the Research Partner Program should submit a project description form (PDF) by August 15.

These forms include a brief description of the project and a summary of the necessary skills for the project. Please remember that students will read this write-up this is information that students will be reading to understand a little about the project and the tasks involved. about the tasks you would like them to complete. These project descriptions will be distributed to the student participants in the first few days of the fall semester. (If you have already submitted a project description in previous years and wish to use the same description, please let Joanne Brzinski know that you want to re-list that same project.)

In the first two weeks of the semester, students selected for the program will interview with faculty submitting projects. After the interviews are completed, faculty mentors will select student assistants who best fit their needs.
