Independent Research Grants: Grant Application

Benefits & Commitments | Application Process | Grant Application | Previous Projects | Reimbursement Forms

Step by Step

1. On-line form
Students applying for support should complete the on-line information form at: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=244701746843

Except where noted, information from this form will be provided to members of the selection committee for use in the selection process, and by the program office for use in administering the grant. That information includes the following:

Academic and Project information: You are asked to provide information about your academic program of study and your cumulative and major GPA. Please put as your first major the field most closely related to the work on your project. Indicate the title of your project and your faculty mentor.

Personal information: This information is voluntary and refusal to provide it will not subject you to any adverse treatment. This information will be kept confidential and will be used only in accordance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Title IX of the Education Amendment of 1972. Emory University's Office of the Registrar will require this information in order to process fellowship awards; our office uses this information to track program application trends. This information will not be provided to the selection committees.

Contact information: We contact you at the addresses provided. Early notification of your status is provided via email and to your local address. Your permanent address should be a place where you regularly receive official mail from the university, and where you can be contacted after spring semester. Indicate whether this is your parents' address, the address of a friend, or other permanent address. Please be sure that we have an Emory email address and a local phone number for you.

Institutional Research Board (IRB): If your project involves human subjects (including experiments, field research, interviews, surveys, or questionnaires), you may need approval by the Institutional Research Board (IRB) before beginning your research (see IRB page).

The following additional application materials should be turned in to 300 White Hall with the forms provided. At the top of each page, indicate your name and the grant semester.

2. Project Proposal and Budget

3. Grant Application (PDF)

4. Faculty Letter of Support (PDF)

Your faculty mentor is the faculty member who will oversee and can comment on the proposed project. Please have your mentor submit the Faculty Letter of Support form (PDF) with his or her letter directly to Dean Joanne Brzinski in the College Office for Undergraduate Education. This letter of support should discuss your academic background, your work ethic, your overall potential as an independent researcher and scholar, and the mentor's willingness to mentor the student and his/her project. Your mentor is more likely to write a strong, supportive letter if he/she is familiar with your performance in the classroom or laboratory, work ethic, academic background, etc. It is essential that your faculty mentor have a copy of your research proposal in order to comment about your specific research plans. Faculty whose students are selected to receive grants are eligible to request up to $500 in research funds for themselves. They will be contacted after student selection about these funds.

5. Academic Transcript

Your course transcript confirms that you have the necessary background to succeed in our program. The transcript need not be official. Should you print your transcript from OPUS, please confirm all transcript information is on the printed page. If you have spent more than a semester at another university or college, you need to include a copy of your academic transcript from that school as well.

6. Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval information

If your proposed research involves work with human subjects, you must receive approval from the Institutional Review Board (IRB), a research oversight committee charged with assuring, both in advance and by periodic review that appropriate steps are taken to protect the rights and welfare of humans participating as subjects in approved research studies.

7. Travel Forms

All students proposing research projects which require travel must fill out the travel forms which apply to their projects.
