Graduate Fellows

Application Form & Research Skills Assessment (PDF)

SIRE Graduate Fellows participate in the SIRE Research Partner Program, an Emory College grant program that promotes undergraduate research for students in their first and second years. Fellows include at least one graduate student from each area of the Arts & Sciences—humanities, social sciences and sciences.

In addition to helping develop and coordinate research skill-building workshops in their respective areas, Fellows meet weekly with their student group to follow their progress and to provide research support. When necessary, Fellows will work with students and their faculty mentors to solve problems that emerge.

Fellows will work approximately 15 hours per week in the Undergraduate Research Partner Program. The fellowship period is 12 months (July through June). The $19,000 stipend is jointly funded by the Graduate School of Arts and Science and the Dean's Office of Emory College.

Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of their experience in research methods, interest in mentoring undergraduate students involved in research, relevant coursework (if applicable), and a letter of recommendation from a faculty member familiar with applicant's research and teaching abilities. In addition, all fellows must meet the following criteria:

    1. Fellows in the humanities and social sciences must complete all requirements for the Ph.D. except for their dissertations and be admitted to candidacy by the April of the year the fellowship will begin. Science fellows must have completed three years or more years of graduate study.
    2. Fellows cannot be otherwise employed, except for work on their dissertation or in their research lab, since the goal is to work fully on the dissertation except for the time required in the Research Partners Program.
    3. Fellows should not be receiving other support from the University , except for funds from their PI to top up the SIRE grant to the normal grants levels in their department.
    4. Preference will be given to applicants who expect to complete their dissertations within the fellowship year, normally students in their fifth or sixth year of study.
    5. Science graduate students must have the support of their principal investigator/ dissertation chair to apply.

Application procedures
Completed applications will consist of seven collated sets of the following:

    1. Application form and research skills assessment (PDF)*
    2. A cover letter outlining your dissertation project, including progress thus far and a schedule for completion, teaching experience and interests, particular research skills, and why you have an interest in mentoring undergraduate researchers.
    3. Curriculum vitae
    4. A registrar's copy of the Emory transcript (one original and 6 copies) from OPUS
    5. Faculty letter of recommendation, preferably from the dissertation adviser. This letter should assess teaching ability, identify strong research skills and experiences, and comment on scholarly promise and progress on the dissertation.
