Scholarly Inquiry and Research at Emory (SIRE)

Graduate Fellows

SIRE Graduate Fellows are a vital component to the SIRE undergraduate research program.  The fellows are selected from diverse graduate programs in the Humanities, Social Sciences and Natural Sciences and they work together to support the undergraduate students in the Research Partners Program. This fellowship is an excellent opportunity to work with graduate students from other fields in a collegial fashion - much like you might work with faculty colleagues in the future.  Also, this is a unique opportunity to mentor undergraduate researchers who are not working directly with you.  This arrangement positions the graduate fellows to observe and support the mentor-mentee research relationship from both sides - offering a special chance to observe what actions and approaches make the relationship most productive.

Fellows are responsible for supporting the undergraduate researchers with educational programming and one-on-one mentoring.  Fellows meet weekly with the SIRE director to plan workshops for the undergraduate researchers.  Workshops cover diverse topics such as: practicing oral presentations, communicating research to diverse audiences, discussing research ethics, and implementing specific research methods.  Each of the graduate fellows is also responsible for supporting a subset of the undergraduate researchers in their SIRE experience.  For example, each graduate student assigned to a group of 10-15 of the undergraduates to mentor them through what may be their first research experience. These conversations include discussions about how to act professionally in the research setting, how to communicate with an intimidating professor, and how to manage research time and coursework.

The fellowship is a 12-month fellowship running from August 1st to July 30th each year, and fellows work 10-15 hours per week with the SIRE program.  Funding for the fellowship depends on the fellow’s graduate department or program.  For students in the Humanities and Social Sciences, the SIRE fellowship provides a full stipend.  For students in the Natural Sciences, the fellowship provides a supplement in addition to the stipend paid by their research labs.  Please see the pages below for specifics for each fellowship year.
