Overview

For undergraduate students who would like to participate more fully in meaningful research early on in their academic career, the College offers Scholarly Inquiry and Research at Emory (SIRE). At Emory College, teaching and research go hand-in-hand as experienced faculty bring their commitment to sharing knowledge in the classroom and producing scholarship that makes a valuable contribution to the world. Students bring fresh insights and energy to both teaching and research, creating an even more dynamic intellectual community.

SIRE promotes undergraduate research projects through grants, faculty-student research partnerships, and summer research stipends, offering advantages to both students and faculty. Undergraduate research programs increase retention, improve study skills, and create stronger bonds for students. At the same time, these undergraduate researchers assist faculty in accomplishing ambitious research and allow faculty to work with self-motivated, developing scholars.

SIRE programs are available to any undergraduate students in Emory College in good academic standing. Several programs, each suited to different student levels or needs, are offered each year, and students may be accepted in more than one program per academic year.

Independent Research Grants
SIRE grants, generally awarded to third- and fourth-year students, support independent research and scholarly projects. These grants provide research support for independent projects related to students' academic work, whether for a course, an honors project, or independent work under the supervision of a faculty mentor.

Research Partners
SIRE Research Partnerships allow second-year students to participate in scholarly research headed by an Emory faculty member. Student research assistants take special workshops on research skills and techniques as part of this partnership program.

Summer Programs
SIRE provides grants for summer research.

  • On-campus summer participants may reside in campus housing at no charge and receive an expense stipend while performing full-time independent research at Emory.
  • Off-campus summer grants provide research support for independent projects related to students' academic work.
  • SIRE's International Research Experience for Science Students provides summer grants for students working in a science laboratory in another country.

Reseach Symposiums
At the end of the grant period, students will present their research in a research symposium, and will write a report on their project. Symposia will be organized during Family Weekend in the fall, and during the Emory Scholars weekend during the spring. Students can present their research in the symposia in appropriate forms, which may include oral presentations, performances, or posters.

Graduate Fellows
SIRE Graduate Fellows participate in the SIRE Research Partner Program, an Emory College grant program that promotes undergraduate research for students in their first and second years. Fellows include at least one graduate student from each area of the Arts & Sciences—humanities, social sciences and sciences.

Conference Presentations
Each year the SIRE program provides support for up to 20 undergraduates who are presenting their research at professional conferences in their field. The decision to fund students is based on the quality of student proposals, overall academic records, and recommendations from faculty mentors.
