- There are two types of page in this
hypertext supplement
- Outline pages: these roughly parallel
the classroom lectures. Please note that because hypertext
pages emphasize the visual aspects of history, some lectures
correspond to more than one web page.
- Graphic pages: these show and
describe photographs, maps or illustrations
- Use the outline pages to review or
prepare for lectures. These pages include hypertext link to
related graphics pages.
- The sidebar can be used to display
either a table of contents or an index: use the box in the bottom
lefthand corner to select the preferred mode. Use the table of
contents to review outline and graphic pages in the same order as
the classroom presentation. Use the index for thematic
review.
- Major vocabulary items are listed at the
bottom of the outline pages. Click on these to hear the word
pronounced.
- Major vocabulary items are also
presented in Japanese, but you will need a Japanese capable
browser to view these pages.
Technical requirements:
- These pages will look best on machines
with 16-bit video (thousands of colors). If the images look patchy
or grainy, consider upgrading your video.
- These pages use JavaScript and frames,
so please use a browser that supports these features such as
Netscape 3.0 (or later). In keeping with Microsoft's plans for
global domination, Internet Explorer does not use Java, but
employs its own weird and propriety scripting language. IE will
not display some pages properly.
- These pages also use Orient, a special
font that I developed to display correctly the romanized versions
of Japanese and Korean. In order to view these pages with the
proper diacritical marks:
- Please download and install the
Mac or Windows 95 version of Orient.
- The Mac verson is a self-extracting
archive. To install the Mac version, drag the font to the Fonts
folder in your System folder and restart your browser.
- The Windows version is in ZIP format.
To install the Windows version, go to Fonts under Control
Panels and then use the Install New Fonts function under the
File menu.
- If you do not wish to download Orient,
please examine the character substitution table below. Note that
the umlaut becomes the Japanese macron and the circumflex becomes
the Korean breve.
- If you are using Internet Explorer 3.0
(or later) or Netscape 4.0 (or later), the browser will
automically use Orient font where required. If you are using
another browser please set the preferred display font to Orient.
